Ditch the Scale! A Kinder Weigh of Measuring Your Health

Do you habitually weigh yourself daily? Are you anxiously waiting to see if the number is a little different today, praying the pizza last night didn’t inflict too much damage? Do you measure your fat percentage on some slick scale hoping the ketogenic diet is working? Look, it’s great to have a system to know if you’re within designated, personal parameters. However, the mercurial nature of weight may often lead to increased stress and anxiety; or some blend of self-loathing, shame, tension, and guilt- all of which increases oxidative stress in your body. (Ironically enough, oxidative stress can actually worsen weight status).  

​Consider tabling the micromanaging and shift to kinder approaches of self-monitoring. The following are a few ideas to initiate a paradigm shift on how you look at your health:  

​​How many times can you smile a day?

How many squats or lunges can you do?

The number of breaths in between bites?
​

The number of times you say “I love you” to yourself in a day.

Reducing the number of daily medications.

Number of weeks in a row you have healthy, daily bowel movements?


The number of orgasms in a month.


​The number of pushup
s you can do in one minute (my husband is trying for 2 minutes).

The number of nights in a month you turn off the electronics and paint/read/play guitar instead.

The serving of vegetables you can eat in a day. (A good starting goal is >8 per day).
​

Reducing the number of times you drink alcohol or do drugs in a month.


How many times in a month did you choose a walk or conversation over unnecessary eating?
​

Increasing the percentage of organic food in your diet (increase maybe 5% every month)?
​

How many times did you go to the farmers market in 1 month and eat something seasonal?

How many minutes a day can you meditate?





​

The number of minutes you experience deep, REM sleep.
​
The number of times you truly receive a compliment in a month (it typically involves taking a deep breath and letting it land inside…which might result in a smile).


The number of days in a week you enjoy being outside in the sun for >20 minutes.
​

How many times a week do you stop and literally smell the flower?

How many moments of the week does your bare feet touch the grass?

Reducing your minutes per day using social media.
​

The number of times per month you turned off the Wi-fi (unplugged) and phone while sleeping. ​

​The number of nights in a month you end with “thank you” before drifting off to sleep.

The number of times in a week you eat your lunch outside?

Pick 2-3 three of these items per month that are actually doable and sustainable. If you’re particularly compelled by the experiment, track any changes in a journal. Pick new ones each month and find out if your previous scale method is more or less nourishing to your mind, body, and soul.
